Blocked sewer is a big issue which eventually leads to a lot of chaos in the household. It could lead to the disturbance of the proper functioning of drainage system in the house and even foul smell can be a part of it. So, it is very important to keep a check that all the sewers in the house is clear and properly maintained.
#1. The Bent Wire Hanger
This is quite a simple and easy process. All you need to do is take a regular wire coat hanger and straighten it out to the maximum you can. Then, bend one end over to make a small hook. Push that past the drain cover and start fishing. By doing this, all sorts of hair and other dirty stuff will be out of the drain. Do keep in mind that you have to pull the gunk out, not push it further. When you have got as much out as you can, pour the hot water and the things will be cleared nicely.
#2. Boiling Water
This is one of the most effective and easy tips to use. Boil some water in a kettle, microwave or stove. Boil it to the maximum. Now pour it slowly to the drain in two to three stages, let the hot water to work for a quite a few seconds in between each pour. This is generally the easiest and quickest way to unclog a drain.
#3. Caustic Soda
Before using it, it is necessary to wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Caustic soda also called as Sodium Hydroxide can result in very bad chemical burns. You can pick some up from your local hardware store, but always be careful while handling it. Pour 3/4 gallon of cold water into a mop bucket, and then add 3 cups of caustic soda. Mix it well with an old wooden spoon. It will start to fizz and heat up. Now pour it into the clogged drain and leave it for 20-30 minutes, then flush the drain with boiling water. Repeat if necessary. This will surely clear the blocked sewer.
#4. The Wet and Dry Vacuum
If you have the wet and dry vacuum, it can become a wonderful tool to unclog drains. First, set it to vacuum liquids. Cover up the vent to avert the mess. Then, generate the tightest seal you can over the drain. You can use an old plunger head for this purpose. With the vacuum turned on its highest setting, it can be dominant enough to draw the clog up the pipe and into the vacuum bag. It is not the best technique but if the stage of the blocked sewer is in initial stage, then, it will surely help.
#5. The Drain Snake
It is quite a low-tech piece of equipment that does wonders. It's chiefly a long flexible metal rope with a spiral of metal at the end. You just need to fix it and then pull it. It will help to clear all the blockages.
#6. Baking Soda and Vinegar
Mix 1/3rd of a cup of vinegar with 1/3rd of a cup of baking soda in a measuring cup. It will fizz instantly, and you should not waste time in pouring it down the clogged drain. The fizzing action will help to remove the gunk, hair, and grime that have been set up in the pipe. Let it sit for one hour or even overnight if you can. Flush it with hot water. On the other hand, get as much of the dry baking soda as you can down the drain first, and then pour on the vinegar.
