How Do Modern Photocopiers Work?

Most modern photocopiers use a technology called xerography. This is a dry process that uses electrostatic charges on a light-sensitive photoreceptor. The receptor is first attracted by the electrodes and then transfer toner particles in the form of a powder onto paper in the form of an image. Heat, pressure or a combination of both is then applied to fuse and adhere the toner onto the paper. Other technologies like inkjet are also used particularly for printing design drawings, but xerography is a standard process for office copying.

When a document is xeroxed, extraction of important information from documents needs to be transferred to the medium of the copy, generally paper. To meet this objective, simply extracting individual characters is not sufficient. To solve this purpose, a document analysis technology has been developed which make it possible for automatic extraction of the structured information of electronic documents to convert from paper documents, as well as electronic documents by means of creation of various applications.

What Is the Technology Behind the Working of a Photocopier?

  • After pre-processing, that consists of skew correction, resolution conversion etc., is performed on a document image, the image analysis system analyses the characteristics of the image by means of area analysis to identify such area attributes in the form of text, pictures, tables, and figures which are the contents of the document to be copied.
